The new industrial baseload
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development estimates that energy accounts for 60 percent of data centre operating costs, making artificial intelligence service costs highly sensitive to electricity prices. This physical reality breaks the assumption that the digital economy is largely decoupled from traditional industrial constraints. When computing requires this much raw power, the financial viability of a new data centre depends less on the price of its servers than on the cost of the electricity to run and cool them.
Artificial intelligence hardware packs unprecedented demand into standard server spaces. Texas Electric Broker notes that new clusters can draw 40 to 120 kilowatts per rack, three to six times the density of traditional compute. This density means that running everyday applications requires a radically different scale of generation. For perspective, the same brokerage estimates that each ChatGPT query consumes roughly 10 times the electricity of a Google search.
