In 2023, the global level of resistance of Escherichia coli to third-generation cephalosporins reached 45.1 percent. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately one in six laboratory-confirmed bacterial infections worldwide were caused by bacteria resistant to antibiotics.
The impact is concentrated in specific illnesses. Median resistance is most common in urinary tract infections, affecting approximately one in three cases, and in bloodstream infections, affecting one in six. Escherichia coli serves as a major cause of these community- and hospital-acquired infections.

The cascade of treatment failure
The loss of efficacy in first-line drugs alters medical practice. The World Health Organization notes that resistance complicates empirical treatment and often necessitates the use of intravenous carbapenems or reserve group antibiotics. Regional data reveals disparities in this burden; in the African Region, the extent of resistance for E. coli exceeds 70 percent.
